Sony have announced that their free to play family friendly MMO aptly titled Free Realms now has over 8 million registered users. The service opened its doors on the PC last April.
John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment said:
“Free Realms is more than just a virtual world for our players; it is a portal for imagination. A place where players transform their house into a jumping maze for friends to compete or a petting zoo that boasts all their pets.
Our job as developers is to listen to and predict what they want and give them the tools that inspire and compel them to share their experiences with eight million others.”
8 million registered users is a pretty incredibly achievement for any MMO, although it should be noted that registered users are not the same as active players.
The game can be played online via the Free Realms website through the browser. It’s generally aimed at younger children and early teenagers but it’s not exclusively populated by kids.
Players wishing to purchase an optional membership get access to different quests, jobs and items while an additional micro transaction system allows people to make one off purchases of in game objects.
Sony has also announced an in game Valentine themed event called the “Festival of Hearts” starting later in the week and lasting for the rest of the month.
