White Spaces and Broadband ConnectivityMicrosoft’s announcement to offer broadband connectivity to rural America with white spaces is indeed a welcome move. White spaces are the unutilized channels between television broadcast that will provide broadband connection across United States. With a cell tower white space can advance through vegetation, buildings and other barriers for up to 10 kilometers. This is a five year project which will benefit over two million people. A vast majority of Americans especially students are deprived of broadband connection in today’s digital world. The presence of frequency bands allows the network operators to increase the time span of broadband signals far and wide.  This is the most cost effective way. The white space technology will facilitate the providers to expand their network to the remotest of the community.

Microsoft has propounded that the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) should provide at least three whitespace channels and one available UHF channel in every market. It is vital to turn this technology into a chip therefore it won’t disturb the TV broadcasts. Whitespace technology has a huge potential in rural areas as the houses are located far apart and there is no device points. Also it is not feasible for the cable and fiber optics to function there.  The FCC initiated the incentive auction which if implemented the spectrum in each local area will be clearer and a roll out utilitywill advance more speedily
